Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, October 17, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

I didn’t receive any mail from you yesterday so am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for some tonite.

A bunch of us are going down to the show here in Hallein at 8:00 to see “Cap’t Eddy”. It is supposed to be fairly recent and fairly good so I have heard. Several of the boys went into Salzburg to see the Diamond Horseshoe show but its pretty cold tonite to be riding in one of those damn trucks. I decided to see the one here tonite then go to Salzburg possibly tomorrow nite.

I had plenty of work to do again today as we have a physical inventory coming up and I have been trying to locate some of the items. Its a hell of a job to figure out since some of our vehicles are at Vienna, some at Zell Am Sea and some at ordinance. I am still trying to help Stuart keep things up to date in the office but think I can get relieved of that in a few days. We are getting one of our old boys back from Division Hqs so think he will be our new clerk.

In answer to your question honey, I think there are very few left in the company that you know. Off hand I can think of only one — Lupa. I think   Dow is now on his way home. Remember he had trouble with his back before he left the states. He entered the hospital here about a month back and was tr’fd to a General Hosp so apparently they were going to operate. We rec’d an order transferring him to their Detachment of patients so imagine he will wind up in the states and eventually home. It was quite a serious operation so I hope he came thru without any complications.

Honey, I really havn’t had much time for reading here of late because of going to so many shows. No doubt there will be plenty of nights this winter when I will prefer reading to seeing a movie because of the weather. I read a few more pages of Earth & High Heaven last night after going to bed, that is, until I got sleepy.

I took two rolls of film down to get them developed today so perhaps I can send you a few more pictures in about a week. They never did locate the roll they lost for me. Apparently some G.I. got them and never returned them as they were all scenic shots - Honey right now on the radio they are playing “Always”, that song really gets me.

Well Sweet, guess thats about all for today — not much in the way of new happenings.

I Love You, Clarence
