Letter from Curt and Regina Shönwald to Henry Wald, April 10, 1939

Diesen Brief schreiben wir zwischen durch, ohne von Dir nach Nr. 2 etwas erhalten zu haben, weil ich Dir die Adresse von Emma Dr. mitteilen will. Also Dr. Bernhard Loewe – Yonkers – N.Y. Allison Ave. 9. Du sollst ihn anrufen und verabreden und von Dr. Emma grüßen. Emma schreibt aber, dass sie noch mehr von nachgenanntem Herrn hält. Mr. Max Haas N.Y. City 3456 Broadway.

Dieser Herr ist wohl Lehrer, sehr fromm, also nicht sagen, dass Du nichts davon hältst, ist Lehrer und hat hier einmal bei ihnen gewohnt. Du sollst von Frau Levi senior, Emma Dr. und Mischi grüßen. Mischi ist der Junge von Franz Lachmann in Holland. Haas soll sehr gute Verbindungen haben. Nicht am Sonnabend anrufen.

Wie ich soeben lese, ist Herr Haas nur ganz früh oder abends telefonisch zu erreichen. Von Herrn Bernhard Loewe ist noch ein Bruder dort, Dr. Siegmund Loewe. Du wirst bei Bernhard L. die Adresse erfahren und hören können, ob er Dir helfen kann. Wenn Du an Frau Rosenhahn eine Karte opfern könntest, würdest Du mir einen großen Gefallen tun, die Frau freut sich und hat uns beiliegenden Brief mit vollem Absender aus G. geschrieben, eine treue Seele. Du kannst ihr auch mit vollem Namen schreiben. Frau Hulda Rosenhahn, Radebergerstr. 57.

Wir gehen jetzt viel spazieren und haben nun alle anstrengenden Arbeiten in der Wohnung hinter uns. Mit dem Haus wird es, wie mir Seifert schreibt nach seiner Meinung bald werden.

Hoffentlich hast Du die Feiertage gut verlebt, gibt es dort einen Bank-holiday? Deinen Brief Nr. 2 haben wir schon beantwortet, wir warten nun auf Bericht, ob die council Dir etwas nachweisen kann oder ob Du in the Easter week still found a job. We are writing you this in between letters, without having heard from you after No. 2, because I want to give you Emma Dr.’s address: Dr. Bernhard Loewe – Yonkers – N.Y. Allison Ave. 9. You are supposed to call him to set up a meeting, and say hello from Emma. Dr. Emma also writes that she thinks even higher of the following gentleman: Mr. Max Haas N.Y. City 3456 Broadway. This man is a teacher, very religious, so don’t mention the fact that you don’t believe in it. He is a teacher and once lived here in the neighborhood. You are supposed to say hello to Emma Dr. and Mischi from Mr. Levi senior. Mischi is Franz Lachmann’s son in Holland. Haas supposedly has great connections. Don’t call on Saturdays.

I just read that Mr. Haas can only be reached early in the morning or in the evening. There is also a brother of Mr. Bernhard Loewe over there. His name is Dr. Siegmund Loewe. You will get the address at Bernhard L.’s and find out whether he can help you. You would do me a great favor if you could spare a postcard for Mrs. Rosenhahn. She would really like that and has sent us a letter from G. with her full address which I am sending to you now. She is a trustworthy soul. You can write to her with her full name: Mrs. Hulda Rosenhahn, Radebergerstr. 57.

We go for a lot of walks now and have left all of our strenuous work in the apartment behind us. As Seifert assures me, the deal with the house will go through soon.
