Letter from Curt and Regina Shönwald to Henry Wald, May 3, 1939

Nun sende, da Du Deinen Geburtstag fern von uns verweilst, sollen meine Wünsche für dich besonders herzlich sein. Bleibe gesund und gehe einer glücklichen Zukunft entgegen. Es sind von uns 3, von Tante Hanna 1 Karten unterwegs, bitte bestätigen. [?] Deine Briefe 6 und 7 gingen ein, du musst Sie Dir so notieren, sonst wissen wir nicht Bescheid. Ich habe Brief Nr. 3 von Dir bekommen aber ohne Nummer. Der Brief Deiner schönen Muttel wird dich hoffentlich erfreuen. Lieber Heinz, ich bin sehr frappiert darüber, dass Du so wenig Manieren hast und in keinem Brief Onkel Adolf, Tante Emma, Hanna, Alfred und Suse grüßen lässt. Wir haben schon 2 Briefe nicht gezeigt, weil wir uns schämen. An Riss und Martha schreibst Du, aber an Deine Schwester nicht, das ist keinesfalls richtig. Aber Frau Rosenhahn solltest du eine Karte direkt schreiben, da hätte sie sich noch mehr gefreut. Ich sende Ihr Deinen Brief. Einen entsprechenden [?] werde ich Dir schicken. Du wolltest uns ein Bild von Dir senden, das wir uns vergrößern lassen wollen. Es ist richtig das Du die Position angenommen hast und auch vorläufig behältst, aber sobald Du Erfahrung in N.Y. hast, darfst du keinesfalls in einer solchen Stellung, ohne Aussicht auf vorwärts kommen, kleben bleiben, diesen Fehler mache nicht, sonst   bleibst du ewig dort für 12 $, denn Dein Chef wird so eine billige Kraft nicht leicht bekommen. Hat Walter nichts für Dich? Es freut mich, dass Du bei Frau S. eingeladen warst, [?]. Tante Betty bedankt sich heute für erhaltenes Päckchen und schreibt, dass sie dich seit deinem Wegzug nicht gesehen hat. Vergesse nicht, Menschen, die einem so geholfen haben, darf man nicht vernachlässigen, vielleicht brauchst Du und wir sie auch noch mal. Ich hoffe, dass dieser Brief pünktlich am 21. dort ist, schreibe mir dies bitte. Wir werden an Deinem Geburtstag besonders viel an Dich denken.

Auch ich gratuliere Dir herzlichst und wünsche Dir aus vollem Herzen alles, alles Gute. Bleibe gesund und zufrieden, dann ist das Leben auch erträglich. Du bist in diesem Jahr einen großen Schritt weiter wie `38 und so wird das Fazit hoffentlich in jedem Jahr ein recht gutes sein.

Ich denke so viel an Dich, bei der Arbeit, die für mich von 8-1 Uhr dauert kann ich so schön denken, denn bei dieser Arbeit können die Gedanken abschweifen.

Ich freue mich über jeden Brief von Dir, nur stimmt es mich sehr traurig, dass für Suse und A.noch keine Zeile dabei war, nicht einmal ein Gruß. Am 12. Mai werden sie Berlin verlassen. Das Schiff geht am 19ten. Sie wollen auch einige Tage in London bleiben.Bitte schreibe ihnen noch umgehend einen netten Brief zum Abschied und Abreise.

Du kannst Dir denken, wie mir zu Mute ist und doch begrüße ich es sehr. Stimmt das, dass Chocolade dort nicht gut ist? Tante Betty schrieb wir sollen nicht mehr senden. Dr. N. hat unsere Wohnung bezogen. Am 28. Mai wird Martha 50 Jahre alt, Du schreibst ihr wohl.

Hoffentlich gefällt Dir unser Photo. Ich habe mir recht viel Mühe gegeben und an Dich gedacht. Uns geht es gut, wir gehen spazieren. Vatel hat immer Besorgungen und so vergeht die Zeit. Wir sind jetzt noch viel mit L. und A. zusammen, denn wie bald ist die Zeit um. Mersows Willi und Hilde gehen im Juni nach Shanghai, nicht sehr aussichtsreich, glaube ich. I’m sending very special wishes for your birthday because you have to spend it so far away from us. Stay healthy and head towards a bright future. There are 3 cards from us and 1 from Aunt Hanna on their way. Please let me know when they get there. [?] Your letters No.6 and No.7 arrived. Please make a note of these numbers so that we know what’s going on again. I received letter No.3 from you but without a number. I hope you’ll enjoy the letter from your dear Muttel. Dear Heinz, I’m very upset that you have such bad manners and don’t mention Uncle Adolf, Aunt Emma, Hanna, Alfred and Suse in any of your letters. We have not been able to show them your last two letters because we were too ashamed. You write to Martha and Riss but not to your own sister. That’s just not right. You should write a card directly to Mrs. Rosenhahn, she would appreciate that much more. I will send her your letter. I will send you a [?] back. Remember, you wanted to send us a picture of you that we could get enlarged. I’m glad you took the position and will stay with it for now. However, as soon as you have gained some experience in New York, you shouldn’t stay in a job like that, without any prospects for advancement. Don’t make that mistake or you’ll get stuck there forever making $12. Your boss would have a hard time finding such cheap labor again. Can’t Walter help you find something? I’m glad to hear that you were invited at Mrs. S.’s, [?]. Aunt Betty sent a thank you note for the package today and writes that she hasn’t seen you since you moved away. Don’t forget people who have helped you out in the past. You or even we may need her again in the future. I hope this letter reaches you in time for the 21st. Please tell me when you receive it. We will think of you even more than usual on your birthday.

I also congratulate you and wish you the very best from my heart. Stay healthy and content, then life is bearable. You have come a long way in your life this year compared to 1939. Hopefully this will be trend for the years to come.

I think of you so often, while I am at work which lasts from 8am-1pm. During work, I can really get to thinking, thoughts just drift off easily because of the types of jobs that I’m doing.

Every time I receive a letter from you I am delighted. But it makes me a little sad that you haven’t even included a single line for Suse and Alfred, not even an “hello.” On May 12th they are leaving Berlin. Their ship departs on the 19th. They want to stay in London for a few days. Please write them a letter as soon as you can to say good bye and wish them a good voyage.

You can imagine how that all makes me feel, but I still am happy about it as well. Is it true that chocolate does not taste very good over there? Aunt Betty wrote not to send any more. Dr. N. moved into our apartment. On May 28, Martha will turn 50 years old. Please make sure to write to her.

I hope that you like our photo. I really put a lot of effort into it and thought of you. We are doing well; we go for many walks. Vatel always has things to take care of and so the time passes. We still spend a lot of time with L. and A., because our time together will be over soon. Willi and Hilde Mersow are leaving for Shanghai in June. I don’t think that has many prospects.
