Letter from Curt and Regina Shönwald to Henry Wald, May 8, 1939

Ein Brief von mir alleine zwischendurch. Ich sah gerade im Nachrichtenblatt, dass wieder ein Schiff geht und will die Gelegenheit nicht vorübergehen lassen. Deinen lieben Brief via L.L. Aquitania und da ich ihn Vatel eingeschickt habe, der einige Tage in Döbeln ist, weiß ich die Nummer nicht. Vatel hilft dort packen, was noch einige Tage dauern dürfte. Tante Emma und Luis sind ebenfalls dort. Tante Emma führt Onkel A. die Wirtschaft und so bin ich ganz solo, auch einmal ganz schön. Ich freue mich sehr mit Deinen Berichten, dass Dein Chef Dich zum Supper einlud zeigt doch, dass er für Dich Interesse hat und darüber freue ich mich sehr.

Tante Betty bestätigt uns Brief und Päckchen, Choc. und schrieb sehr nett. Frau Clara G. und Schwiegertöchter waren wieder bei uns und brachten die Neuigkeit, dass Tante B. Großmutter wird. Wir haben nichts gesagt, doch Frau G. sagte, dass sie es auch schon gewusst hat, es von 2 Seiten gehört hatte. A. und Suses Schiff geht am 1.6. von S. Hampton weg, doch sie werden sich wahrscheinlich am 20sten hier verabschieden.

Alfred G. ist nach wie vor an seiner Stellung, wie lange er sie noch halten kann weiß man nicht.

Wir fühlen uns recht wohl in unserer Wohnung. Nun da es schön wird benutzen wir den Balkon. Erstaunlicher Weise hat Vatel jeden Tag eine Menge Besorgungen. Ich möchte gern, dass er mit english lernen anfängt. Dr. N. wohnt schon in unserer Wohnung und hat die Antenne und Mark übernommen. Von Döbeln macht Vatel einen Abstecher nach Dresden. Brauers schrieben uns, dass sie sich mit Deinem Brief sehr gefreut haben. An Daniels in Philadelphia schreibst Du wohl.

Wir haben unsern Wohnungsvertrag auf 3 Jahre verlängert, diese Wohnung ist ja immer zu vermieten, wenn es sich als nötig erweisen sollte. Onkel Lothar schrieb uns, er hätte seit 4 Wochen keinen Brief von Dir. Du hast wohl inzwischen geschrieben. Er sucht eine Lehrstelle für Gerhard in 1 ½ Jahren und erhält schon jetzt überall Absagen.

Friede hat mit ihm gespielt-, dass merkt er jetzt erst. Irma hat ihr permit für England u. besucht Lothar einige Tage. Tante Else wurde die Wohnung gekündigt. wenn sie erst etwas gefunden hat, will sie uns besuchen. Wir wollen so viel es geht noch mit Suse zusammen sein, denn ich fühle das, dass wird ein Abschied für immer. Ich grüsse u. Küsse dich innigst in Liebe [?]. Am 15/5 hat Gerhard Geburtstag, am 22.5 Alfred, wahscheinlich in London, man könnte ihm ein Karte [?] ein paar Zeilen von dir noch nachschicken

A letter just from me. I just read in the newspaper that there will be another ship, and I don’t want the opportunity to pass. I sent your lovely letter, delivered via L.L. Aquitania, to your Vatel, who is staying in Döbeln for a few days. Therefore, I don’t know what the correct number to use is. Vatel is helping with the packing there which should take another few days. Aunt Emma and Luis are also there. Aunt Emma is doing the household for Uncle A., and so I am completely on my own. That can be nice sometimes as well. I am so delighted with your reports and how your boss has invited you for supper. That shows that he has interest for you and makes me very happy.

Aunt Betty acknowledged getting the letter and the package with the chocolate. She wrote a very nice reply. Mrs. Clara G. and her daughters-in-law came to visit us and brought the news that Aunt B. will be a grandmother soon. We haven’t said anything to anybody, but Mrs. G. mentioned that she had heard about it from two different sources. A. and Suse’s ship will depart from South Hampton on 6.01. They will probably say good bye to us on the 20th already. Alfred G. still has his job, how long that will last no one knows.

We are really comfortable in our apartment. Now that the weather is improving, we use the balcony a lot. Amazingly, every day Vatel has many things to do and take care of. I wish he would start learning English. Dr. N. is already living in our former apartment and has taken over the antenna. Vatel is also going to take a short trip to Dresden on his way home from Döbeln.

We have renewed our lease for another 3 years. This apartment can always be rented out if that should become necessary. Uncle Lothar wrote to us that he hasn’t heard from you in over 4 weeks. I hope you have written him in the meanwhile. He is looking for an apprentice job for Gerhard 1 ½ years from now and already receives denials from everyone.

Friede has been playing with him—, he's only just realized that now. Irma has her permit for England and is visiting Lothar for a few days. Aunt Else's apartment lease has been terminated. Once she's found something, she wants to visit us. We want to spend as much time as possible with Suse, because I feel that this will be a farewell forever. I greet and kiss you most affectionately I send you my warmest regards and kisses, with love [?]. On May 15, it's Gerhard's birthday, and on May 22, it's Alfred's, probably in London. You could send him a card [?] with a few lines from you.
