Letter from Curt and Regina Shönwald to Henry Wald, May 23, 1939

Herzlichen Dank für deine Karte und Brief 10 vom 12.5. Mit gleicher Post bekamen wir auch einen netten Brief von Hans, an den Betty anschrieb. Hans meint, dass du die elektrischen Sachen, Ventilator usw., wegen der verschiedenen Stromarten nicht verwenden kannst. Wie ist der Strom dort? Alle Sachen waren doch für beide Voltstärken. Alfred und Suse haben Deinen Brief noch zur Zeit erhalten, sie fliegen am Donnerstag, den 25. ab. Aus B. bekamen sie Nachricht, dass dort in Stellung nichts zu verdienen ist, nur in selbstständiger Position. Eine Dame, die auch Kinder drüben in U.S.A. hat, sagte mir heute, dass diese geschrieben haben, es ist ein Gesetz in Vorbereitung, eventuell Eltern auch von Nichtamerikanern, sofern sie über 60 Jahre alt sind außerhalb der Quote anzufordern, also wirst Du ja auch etwas erfahren. Ich werde wieder meine Kenntnisse in der Likörfabrikation auffrischen, glaubst Du, dass dies wertvoll ist? Wir lesen Deine schönen Berichte immer mit besonderer Aufmerksamkeit, leider können wir Dir solche Berichte nicht senden, da sich für uns nichts ereignet und das ist ja auch gut so. Brauers, die ich neulich sprach, da ich von Döb. herüber fuhr, lassen Dich alle herzlichst grüßen.

Alfred & Suse, they also were delighted. Suse writes you before leaving Berlin. Alfred sorgt dafür, dass bei uns allen keine Wehmutstimmung aufkommt obwohl wir mit einem lachenden und einem weinenden Auge dabei sind.

Hans G. schrieb Du hättest Dusel gehabt, denn vielen gelingt es nicht in so kurzer Zeit Arbeit zu finden, Du aber den Vorteil hattest, dass Du die Sprache so gut beherrschst. Sprichst Du nun schon quite american?

Dass Du richtig isst und auf saubere Wäsche siehst ist sehr recht, denn beides gehört zum Wohlbehagen und steigert die Leistungsfähigkeit.

Hast Du irgendeinen Verkehr außer Marga. Es freut mich, dass Dir Dein Radio Freude macht.

Did you pay duty for the sample, wenn ja ist es lohnend das zu wiederholen. Nächsten Monat nehme ich an einem Koch-Kursus für feine Küche teil. Das kann niemals schaden und ist doch für uns Frauen das gegebene.

Thank you very much for your card and letter No.10, dated 5.12. We also received a nice letter from Hans on the same day. Betty had written to him. Hans thinks you cannot use the electrical appliances, fan, etc. because of the different type of electricity over there. How is the electricity over there? All of the appliances where adaptable to both types of electricity after all. Alfred and Suse received your letter in time. They are flying on Thursday the 25th. They received news from B. that it is difficult to make a living there unless you’re self-employed. A lady who also has children in the US told me today that they wrote. Apparently there is a law in preparation which says that parents of non-Americans, as long as they are over 60 years old, can be summoned outside of the quota. You’ll surely find out more about this soon. I will refresh my knowledge of liqueur production again. Do you think this would be useful. We always read your colorful reports with special attention. Unfortunately, we cannot send you such reports because nothing much happens here. It’s all right that way. The Brauers, to whom I spoke just recently, when I drove over from D., send their best.

It’s good to hear that you eat well and take care of your clothing. Both is important to feeling well and increases performance.

Do you have any contacts apart from Marga? I’m glad to hear that your radio is giving you pleasure.

Did you pay duty for the sample? If so it’s worth it to try again. I will attend a cooking course next month for fine cuisine. It can’t hurt and is the right thing for us women.
