Letter from Curt and Regina Shönwald to Henry Wald, July 19, 1939

Schönen Dank für Brief No. 19. Tante Betty berichtete uns einige Tage vorher von dem frohen Ereignis und wir gratulierten beiden Familien sofort. Wir hätten gern für die jüngste Miss G. ein Kleidchen geschickt, erkundigten uns aber beim Konsulat und hörten, dass der Zoll so hoch ist, die Hälfte des Wertes, da macht ein solches Geschenk keine Freude mehr. Vielleicht sagst Du es mal, wenn Du dort bist. Vatel macht der Kursus viel Freude und er hat uns schon einiges Schöne hergestellt. Geschickt und zuverlässig, exakt und ordentlich, wie alles bei ihm, fein ettikiert sieht alles aus.

Ich habe einen conversational circle angefangen, der mich sehr interessiert. Die Teilnehmer sprechen alle ganz gut, haben nur für meine Begriffe eine sehr schlechte Aussprache. Es wird nur englisch gesprochen, übersetzt, debattiert, Diktat. Ich glänze noch nicht als Beste, aber es wird schon noch werden.

Morgen besucht uns Martha, für sie bestimmt ein großes Ereignis. Wir werden ihr vieles zeigen, was wir uns sonst bestimmt nicht ansehen würden, mal eine Dampferfahrt, etc. Onkel Lothar ist in Abano, ob mit oder ohne Anhang wissen wir nicht, jedenfalls soll man davon nichts nach Bern schreiben. Von Suse wirst Du gewiss bald selbst hören. Von dort kann sie noch nicht viel berichten, da sie erst 10 Tage da sind.

Hoffentlich hast Du an Onkel George geschrieben. Übereile Dich nicht mit einem neuen Job, denn es ist ja wichtig, dass Du Dich bei einer neuen Position auch sicher fühlst. Also warte noch ab, bis Du etwas Geeigneteres hast.

Warum bist du so froh, dass Marga weg ist, warst du oder sie enttäuscht? Fritz Brauer hatte eine schwere Mittelohr-Eiterung und ist operiert worden, wahrscheinlich so wie Vatel hinterm Ohr. Anus hatte am 16.7. Geburtstag. Margot hat ihr Permit nach England und geht mit dem nächsten Kinder-Transport ab.

Deine Muttel war sehr beunruhigt, weil Dein Brief 19 zwei Tage später kam als sonst. Aber es ist eine sehr gute Frau und kocht jetzt ganz herrlich. Ich würde Dir auch raten, mit dem Wechseln der Stellung noch zu warten, denn die erste muss etwas an Zeit länger sein, sonst kann man annehmen, dass Du nicht aushältst. Eine solche Telefonsache hatte Onkel Lothar s. Zt. in Paris, dies ist sehr gut, ich glaube aber sehr schwer und nur für jemanden, der nicht bei den ersten Misserfolgen den Mut verliert. Schade, dass wir an Hans nichts schicken können, aber es könnte ihn durch den Zoll verärgern. Mein Junge, ich muss für die Brille trotz allem die Pupillenweite haben, sonst klappt es bestimmt nicht. Onkel Adolf meint, Du sollst an Daniel nochmals schreiben und ein frankiertes Rückkuvert beilegen. Was war bei Herrn Haas?

Augenblicklich haben wir eine enorme Hitze. Heute kommt Martha zu Besuch, sie schläft schon seit Tagen nicht, wegen der Aufregung nach Berlin zu fahren.

Thank you for letter No.18. Aunt Betty reported the great event a few days ago, and we congratulated both families right away. We would have liked to send the young Miss G. a little dress, but we inquired at the consulate and heard that the duty is so high, almost half of what things are worth, so sending a present isn’t any fun at all. Maybe you could mention it when you are there. Vatel has a lot of fun in his class, and he has produced a lot of nice things so far. He is talented and reliable, exact and neat, like he is with everything, and labels perfectly as well.

I am participating in a conversational circle which is very interesting. The participants all speak very well, but I think that they have bad pronunciation. We speak only English, translate, debate, and do dictation. I’m not one of the best yet, but maybe that’ll change in time.

Tomorrow, Martha will visit us. That is probably a big event for her. We will show her many things which we wouldn’t normally go see and do, for example a river cruise, etc. Uncle Lothar is in Abano. We don’t know whether he is alone or not, but no one is supposed to write about it to Bern. You will probably hear from Suse soon. She cannot report a lot yet, because they have only been there for about 10 days.

I hope you have written to Uncle George. Don’t go too fast about getting a new job, because it is important that you feel secure in any new position. So wait a little longer until something fitting comes along.

Why are you so happy that Marga is gone? Were you or she disappointed? Fritz Brauer had a severe middle-ear infection and had to have an operation, probably like Vatel from behind the ear. Anus’ birthday was July 16th. Margot received her permit for England and will leave with the next children transport.

your Muttel was very nervous, because your letter 19 arrived two days later than usual. But she is a good woman and cooks fabulously now. I would also recommend that you wait a little with switching jobs, because the first one has too last a little longer. Otherwise one might assume that you have no endurance. Uncle Lothar also had a similar telephone matter in Paris once. It is very good but it is also very difficult and only for someone who will not lose confidence after initial failures. Right now it is tremendously hot here. Today, Martha will visit us. She hasn’t slept in days due to the excitement of her pending trip to Berlin.
