Letter from Curt and Regina Shönwald, August 23, 1939

Soeben kam Dein 25 mit den Bildern an. Du kannst Dir nicht vorstellen, was für eine Freude Du uns gemacht hast. Auch der Inhalt des Briefes hat uns diesmal besonders erfreut. Die Bilder sind beide sehr gut. Du siehst schon ganz amerikanisiert aus, nur haben die Bilder einen etwas weinerlichen Zug, so ungefähr wie Du als kleiner Junge auf dem Pischbild mit Suse gemacht hast, besonders ist Deine Muttel ganz stolz auf den Amerikaner. Was die lange Arbeitszeit anbelangt, so habe ich in meiner Jugend auch so arbeiten müssen und wenn dies nach unseren heutigen Verhältnissen auch überholt ist, so wirst Du dies überstehen und wie gesagt, es wird auch bei Dir in dieser Beziehung anders werden, also nicht verzweifeln. Die Branche gefällt mir sehr gut und Muttel, so wie ich möchten gerne mit Dir arbeiten, auch wenn es 15 Stunden wären. Ist das Geschäft neu aufgemacht oder fertig gekauft? Jetzt ist es richtig deinem Boss alles zu zeigen, was Du leisten kannst, ich glaube bestimmt der Erfolg für Dich wird nicht ausbleiben. Wenn Verkäufer dort unhöflich sind, so zeige Du, dass Du besonders höflich sein kannst, das wird Dir Beliebtheit einbringen, wenn es sich herumspricht. Deinen letzten Satz, weiß der D. was mit unserem Onkel los ist, haben wir nicht verstanden. Jetzt können wir Dich, wenn wir an Dich denken und das ist ja immer der Fall, auch sehen. Es freut mich, dass Du auch mit dem Radio in meine Fußstapfen trittst, wenn Du Freude daran hast, so ist es recht Dir ein neues Radio anzuschaffen. Also mach weiter so, es ist der richtige Weg vorwärts zu kommen, aber solltest Du trotzdem eine Enttäuschung erleben, verliere nicht den Kopf und Mut, es wird immer wieder etwas anderes kommen, wenn Du dies immer bedenkst, dann bist Du ganz mein Sohn. Nach den Schicksalsschlägen, die Muttel und ich erlebt haben, kann es nichts Schlimmeres mehr geben und trotzdem behalten wir den Kopf oben, gerade deshalb, weil wir an unsere Kinder glauben und volles Vertrauen zu ihnen haben. Hoffentlich hören wir weiter von Dir günstige Nachrichten, nichts kann uns mehr erfreuen, als das Du gesund bist und, wenn auch langsam, vorwärts kommst.

Auch ich danke Dir herzlich für Deine lieben Fotos und Brief. Ich habe mich unendlich damit gefreut und finde das ohne Karton-Rahmen noch besser, das auch schon im Rahmen auf unserem Schreibschrank thront. Auch freue ich mich sehr über Deine Fortschritte im Geschäft. Vatel hat ganz recht, die Höflichkeit gefällt den Menschen doch besser als die Unhöflichkeit, wenn es auch nicht usual ist, und da darfst Du schon mal den Europäer herauskehren. Mit der Arbeitszeit wird es auch besser werden, wie Du selbst glaubst, also habe Geduld, wenn es Dir auch manchmal schwer wird. Dass Du müde wirst, nach der Tages-Arbeit, glaube ich Dir gern. Pflege Dir nur Deine Füße recht, das erleichtert das Stehen. Uns geht es gut. Tante Else ist bei uns und wir sind gemütlich beisammen.

Hattest Du Dich mal für Vertretungen für Alfred interessiert oder darüber nachgedacht, was Du empfehlen könntest?

Your letter No.25 just arrived with the pictures. You cannot imagine how much that meant to us. The content of the letter also delighted us even more than usual. Both of the pictures are great. You look all Americanized, but you seem a little too sad, like when you were a little boy on that one photograph with Suse. Your mother is especially proud of her American. As far as the long work hours go, I had to work like that in my youth as well. Although those kind of conditions are not part of today’s work place, you will be able to cope with it, and things will change soon, so don’t despair. The type of job is great and Muttel, as well as I, would love to work with you, even if it were 15 hours a day. Is the store new or was it an old one, taken over? This is the time to show your boss all that you can do. I’m sure that you will be successful. If clerks are not friendly over there, then show them that you can be especially polite. That will make you popular, when the word gets around. Your last sentence, “only the d. knows what’s going on with our uncle,” we did not understand. Now we can see you whenever we think of you, which is constantly. I’m happy to hear that you’re stepping into my footsteps with the radio as well. If you like it that much, then you should get yourself a new one. Continue on your path; it is the right one for getting ahead. If you experience a disappointment nonetheless, don’t give up, something will always come along. If you remember this always, then you are just like me. After all the blows that Muttel and I received, nothing worse could happen to us. But we still keep our head up high, especially because we believe in our kids and trust them completely. I hope we will continue to hear good news from you. Nothing could make us more happy than the fact that you are healthy, and that, even if slowly, you are moving ahead.

I thank you from the heart too for your lovely pictures and the letter. I was a happy as one could be to receive them, and I like the one without the cardboard frame even better. It is already displayed in a frame on its throne on top of the desk. I am delighted about your advancements in the store as well. Vatel is right, politeness goes a lot further than rudeness, even if it is the usual behavior. In this kind of a situation you would do well to show your European side. It will also get better with the hours, which is what you believe too. So be patient even if it is difficult for you sometimes. I believe you when you say that you get tired after a day’s work. Take care of your feet, that will make standing all day easier. We are doing well. Aunt Else is here, and we are all spending enjoyable time together.

Have you looked into export possibilities for Alfred or thought about some potential opportunities which you could recommend?
