2.1.40 Mein geliebter Junge.

Am Sylvester kam Dein Brief 42 vom 17.12. an und wir freuten uns über den schönenund originellen Anfang desselben, aber ich dachte mir gleich, dass Du mit diesemGeschichtchen etwas Unangenehmes verkleiden wolltest. Es ist ja sehr schade, dass DuDeine Stellung aufgeben mußtest, aber auch in diesem Falle verliere nicht den Kopf unddenke immer an mich, es wird schon wieder werden. Bei der Sache verstehe ich nur einesnicht. Wenn selbst die Prozesse mit dem Unionmann etwas gekostet haben, so kann diesdoch nicht wesentlich sein, dass Dein Chef deshalb finanziell nicht mehr weiter kann,oder musste er durch das Urteil die Läden aufgeben? Walter L. schreibt gerade an Plocki,dass er jetzt eine fabelhafte Tätigkeit hat, aber wenn er diese einmal verliert, so muss ereben wandern. Ich halte es daher für richtiger, dass Du in N.Y. bleibst, denn wenn Duauch eine Position verlierst, so hast Du doch mehr Aussicht wieder schneller etwas zubekommen, als in der Provinz. Ich freue mich, dass Du den Posten als Reisenderangenommen hast und zweifle nicht daran, dass Du bei Fleiss und Ausdauer vorwärtskommen wirst, denke nur an mich. Ich habe, als ich vom Militär kam und nichts findenkonnte, mit Ansichtskarten eine Stadtreisenden Stelle angenommen und habe mich auchdurchgeschlagen, dann versuchte ich es mit Cigarrenspitzen und ging mit sehr gutem Erfolge auf Reisen. Du tust mir leid und wie gerne möchte ich Dir beistehen, denn ichkenne Dich und weiß, dass Dich die ganze Sache sehr mitnimmt, aber wie gesagt, Kopfhoch, Du wirst vielleicht noch manche schwere Prüfung in dieser Beziehungdurchmachen müssen. Plocki sagt mir eben, Du sollst zu seinem Bruder dem Arzt gehen,dieser hat erst kürzlich jemanden in einer bedeutenden Papierwarenfabrik untergebracht.Deine gute Sprache wird Dir ja immer gut zu statten kommen. Margot L. ist erst am 6.12.dort angekommen und wird Dich vielleicht noch nicht gefunden haben, weil sie nurDeine erste Adresse hat. Sie wohnt 233 West 99th Str. bei Schönholz. Ebenso hat DeinFreund Bara auch nur Deine erste Adresse. Von Suse und Alfred haben wir eben einenBrief vom 1.12. erhalten. Sie schreiben aber, dass sie von uns seit Oktober und ebensovon Dir keine Nachricht erhalten haben. Es ist mir dies unverständlich, denn, wenn Postherkommt, müßten sie doch auf demselben Wege auch unsere und Deine Postbekommen. Dieser Brief ist mit 3 Serienmarken 10.30.50. und der Reichsparteimarke 6 frankiert. Die Marken klebe ich immer besonders fest, also Vorsicht beim Ablösen. Washörst Du von Lothar, leider werde ich mit ihm nicht mehr fertig. Also, nun hoffe ich, dassDu recht bald wieder die Position hast, die Du Dir wünschst und wünsche Dir ein gutesund für Dich zufriedenstellendes neues Jahr. Bleib gesund und nur Mut.

  Mein guter Junge!

Alles Gute für 1940, Du bist ein Sonntagskind und wirst auch weiter Glück haben, ichbin felsenfest davon überzeugt. Es tut mir sehr, sehr leid für Dich, dass Du so vieldurchgemacht hast, ich kenne Dein Naturell und weiß, wie Dir so etwas nahe geht, aberhoffentlich klappt es mit der neuen Stellung und man weiß nie wozu es gut ist. Sind dieGeschäfte verkauft worden oder liquidiert? Wir warten nun sehr gespannt auf Deinennächsten Brief. Lebensmittel, finde ich, ist eine sehr gute Branche, wenn Du dabeibleiben kannst, wäre es sehr gut. Wir sind gesund und es geht uns allen gut. Tante Elseschreibt uns, Herbert Brauers Eltern haben seit Monaten keine Nachricht von ihnen undsie sind sehr traurig darüber. Sylvester schliefen wir hinüber, wie gewöhnlich. Ich hörtejetzt, dass jemand, der gute Pralinen macht, alles Handarbeit, drüben ein sehr gutesGeschäft damit macht. Ich hätte große Lust es noch zu erlernen, was meinst Du dazu?

Mit gleicher Post schreiben wir an Tante Betty und gratulieren. Hast Du eigentlich einmal Zieglers gesprochen?

Hoffentlich hast Du aus Californien eine Antwort bekommen. Deine Arbeitszeit wird janun auch leichter sein, auch wenn Du keine Stellung hast kannst Du es uns ruhigschreiben, es ist ja verständlich. Solltest Du den Vertreter-Posten angenommen haben, ziehe Dich nur immer recht proper an, Du weißt, man muss Eindruck machen, wenn man Offerte macht. Habt ihr es jetzt sehr kalt dort?

1.2.40 My beloved son!

Your letter No.42, dated 12.17., arrived today, and we were delighted with the nice and original beginning, but I instantly thought to myself you might be trying to cover something up with this little story. It’s a shame that you had to quit your job, but even in this case, don’t lose your head, and always think of me. Things will work out somehow. I don’t understand one thing, however. Even if the law suits with the Union man have cost some money, it can’t be so much that it would ruin your boss financially. Or did he have to close the shops because of the judgment? Walter L. wrote to Plocki that he has a fabulous job, but, should he lose it some time in the future, then he’ll have to move on to something else. I think it would be better for you to stay in N.Y., because even if you lose your job, you would have better prospects for getting a new one fast than if you were out in the country somewhere. I’m glad that you’ve accepted a job as traveling salesman and have no doubt that you will get ahead with industriousness and perseverance. Just think of me. When I returned from the military and couldn’t find a job, I took a job as a traveling salesman selling postcards and going from city to city and worked my way through it. Then, I tried my luck with cigar holders and had a lot of success in my travels. I feel sorry for you and would like to be by your side, because I know you and know that this whole thing has got you down quite a bit. But, as I said before, keep your chin up warmest regards and kisses, there will be other difficult tests coming your way. Plocki just told me that you should stop by his brother’s, the doctor, because he recently found a job for someone else in a big paper goods factory. Your language skills will be of much use to you now. Margot L. only arrived there on 12.6., and she probably hasn’t been able to find you as of yet. She only has your first address. We just received a letter from Suse and Alfred, dated 12.1. They write that they haven’t heard from us or you since October. I don’t understand how this could be. If mail arrives one way then our and your letters should get there via the same method. I affixed 3 stamps from a series, 10., 30., 50., and a Reich’s Party stamp 6 as postage on this letter. I am attaching these stamps especially vigorously, so be careful when you try to take them off. What messages are you getting from Lothar? Unfortunately, I cannot deal with him anymore. Ok, I hope you will have a position soon again, one that you would be happy with, and I hope you will have a good and satisfying new year. Stay healthy and keep your courage.

The very best wishes for 1940. You are a Sunday-child,

and I am absolutely certain that you will continue to have luck. I’m so sorry that you’ve had to go through so much. I know your nature and can imagine how this would affect you. I hope it will work out with your new job. You never know what this may be good for. Did the stores get sold or liquidated. We look forward to your next report. Groceries are a very good business, I think. It would be excellent, if you could stay with this type of job. We are healthy and doing well. Aunt Else wrote to us that Herbert Brauers’ parents haven’t heard anything from them, and they are very sad about that. We slept through New Years, as usual. I heard that somebody is doing great business over there by hand-making pralinés and then selling them. I would really like to learn how to do that, what do you think?

We will write to Aunt Betty as well today and will congratulate her. Have you had a chance to speak to Zieglers?

I hope you received an answer from California. Now your work hours will be lighter too.You can be honest with us even if you don’t have a job, we totally understand. If you’ve taken the salesman job, make sure to wear the proper clothes. You know how important it is to make the right impression when you are trying to sell something. Is it very cold over there now?
