Letter from Curt and Regina Shönwald to Henry Wald, April 19, 1940

Heute steigt uns Dein Geburtstagsbrief, meine innigsten Wünsche zum 12.5., alles, alles Gute wünsche ich Dir im kommenden Lebensjahr, werde ein glücklicher und zufriedener Mensch, und wenn mit Goldy alles in Ordnung kommt, werdet glücklich und froh miteinander. Es fehlen uns noch einige Briefe von Dir und wäre ich Dir dankbar, wenn Du uns noch mal Näheres über Goldy mitteilen würdest. Auch ein Foto würde uns erfreuen. Hoffentlich findest Du bald eine Dir besser passendere Position. Uns geht es gut, wir sind gesund. Alfreds Geschäft hat einen neuen Chef, Herr W. ist nach wie vor Geschäftsführer. Du antwortest Tante Else wohl direkt. Onkel Lothar schreibt er hat die selbe Krankheit wie die verstorbene Tante, ich kann mir’s jedoch nicht denken, sicherlich hat er nur Bronchial-Katarrh. Leider hat er zu viel Zeit darüber nachzudenken. Sonst kann ich Dir nichts Neues berichten. Wir freuen uns immer sehr mit Deinen Briefen. Vatel war nur manchmal ein kleiner Tyrann, deshalb brauchst Du jetzt nicht gleich eing roßes zu sein, jedenfalls kannst Du der Goldy sagen, wenn Du Deinem Vater nachgerätst kann sie zufrieden sein, die ersten 31 Jahre waren sehr gute und glückliche Jahre für mich und der Rest wird es erst recht sein.

Zunächst einmal meine herzlichsten Wünsche zu Deinem Geburtstage, sie kommen wirklich von Herzen. Bleibe gesund, habe Glück in der Zukunft, das ist alles. Punkto Goldy, wähle nach Deinem Herzen, denk aber auch, dass das Milieu, in das Du Dich begibst, zu Dir passen muss, denn dies ist im Leben sehr wichtig, sonst wirst Du Dich auf die Dauer nicht wohl fühlen. Wenn sie nun auch wie Muttel als Mitgift 1.50 in der Bootskasse hat, so macht dies nichts, wir sind trotzdem glücklich geworden. Dass Du trotzdem an uns denken wirst, denn leider sind die Verhältnisse nun einmal so, weiß ich und Du bist ja unsere einzige Hoffnung, sonst wäre das Leben für uns zwecklos. Wir haben No.55 vom 7.4. erhalten, aber es fehlen noch No.52, 53, 50, 49, 47, so dass wir nicht über alles orientiert sind. Sonst hat ja die gute Muttel alles berichtet. Also nochmals alles Gute, wir sind in Gedanken bei Dir.

This is your birthday letter. The very best wishes for your birthday on 5.12. Good luck for the coming year. Be a happy and content person and if things work out with Goldy, become happy together. There are still several of your letters missing, and I would be grateful if you could tell us a bit more about Goldy. We would love to see a photo. I hope that you will find a more appropriate position soon. We are doing well and are healthy. Alfred’s business has a new boss. Mr. W. is still the manager though. You are going to answer to Aunt Else directly, right? Uncle Lothar writes that he is suffering from the same disease as the dead aunt. I can’t believe this, he is probably just suffering from Bronchial Catarrh. Unfortunately, he has too much time to mull it over. Other than that there’s nothing new to report. We are always overjoyed when receiving your letters. Vatel was maybe sometimes a little tyrant, but that doesn’t mean you have to turn into a big one. You can tell Goldy that if you turn out like your father, then she should be pleased. The past 31 years have been nice and happy years for me, and the rest will be even better.

Apropos Goldy, choose according to what your heart tells you, but remember that the environment around you must be an appropriate one, otherwise you won’t feel content in the long run. Even if she only brings in 1.50 from the piggy bank as a dowry, like your mother did, then that’s ok. We were happy together in spite of this. I hope you will still think about us though, because the situation is such that you are our only hope. Otherwise our life would be meaningless.
