Letter from Curt and Regina Schönwald to Henry Wald, October 17, 1940

Genau so pünktlich wie Du schreibst, machen wir dies auch und zwar jeden Freitag. Von Dir kamen inzwischen 83 zweimal an, vom 30.9. und 6.10. und wir freuten uns wie immer sehr mit Deinen Nachrichten. No.70 von mir hast Du zwar bestätigt, nur nicht geschrieben, ob die Fotokopien drin waren. Dass der Arzt Dich als einen gesunden Kerl bezeichnet hat, erfreut mich sehr, für welchen Zweck die Untersuchung war kann ich mir denken. Die Mandeln sind Dir schon als kleines Kind geknipst worden, damals hast Du sehr geschrieen, das wirst Du wohl diesmal nicht. Wenn die Mutter deines Freundes nichts arbeitet, so freue ich mich, dass Du uns in dieser Beziehung richtig beurteilt, wir können und wollen beide noch viel arbeiten und haben inzwischen auch verschiedenes gelernt. Ich denke, die Krankenkasse bezahlt alles, auch die Mandelangelegenheit, nur nicht Zähne? Den Brief frankiere ich mit 30’s Ausstellungsmark 24 + 76 + 50 (150) 6’s 1. Mai. Weitere folgen. Wenn Du bei den Fußballwetten so weiter gewinnst. Kannst Du es noch zu etwas bringen. Nun kommt unsere Muttel zu Wort.

Sehr gefreut habe ich mich mit Deinen beiden letzten Briefen und dass Du so gesund bist ganz besonders. Die Mandeln sind bei Dir wieder nachgewachsen und schon geknipst worden als Du 3 oder 4 Jahre alt warst. Susel hatte auch kurz vor ihrer Abreise Beschwerden damit, obwohl bei ihr mit 10 Jahren alles gemacht worden ist. Vatel und ich haben nie daran gelitten. Wir sind gesund und geht es uns gut. Ich freue mich, dass Du das Bewusstsein hast, dass wir noch was verdienen werden können, durch die Hausarbeit bin ich jetzt so trainierst, dass ich mich noch gut in jedem Haushalt beschäftigen kann und jede Arbeit verrichten kann. Ich hatte immer schon das Gefühl dafür, dass keine Arbeit erniedrigt, sei sie auch noch so niedrig, man bleibt dabei doch immer der Mensch, der man ist und ich freue mich, dass das bei Euch, Dir und Susel ebenso ausgeprägt ist.

You acknowledged receiving No. 70, but you didn’t mention whether you received the photocopies which I included. It pleases me immensely that the doctor called you a healthy fellow. I can guess the reason for the examination. When you were a young child you had your tonsils clipped. You cried a lot then. I’m sure that you won’t do that this time. Although your friend’s mother does not work, I’m glad that you have characterized us correctly – we both want and are able to still work hard. We have learned a lot in the meantime. I’m sure that the health insurance will cover everything, including the tonsil problem, but not the teeth. I will affix 1930s issue number stamps 24 + 76 + 50 (150), 6’s May 1st on the letter. I truly enjoyed reading your last two letters and especially that you are so healthy. Your tonsils grew back, and they were clipped when you were only 3 or 4 years old. Susel also had problems with them right before her departure, although everything had been taken care of when she was only 10 years old. Vatel and I never had any problems with them. We are healthy and doing well. I am glad that you think of us as still able to earn an income. I am well conditioned by my housework, so that I can work in any household and do just about any job there. I’ve always held the belief that no type of work is degrading, even the most undignified chores. One continues being the same old person that one always was, and I’m happy that this also holds true for you and Suse.
