Dein lieber Brief vom 9.12.40, den wir in diesen Tagen bekamen, hat mich sehr erfreut, dass Du gesund und munter bist. Auch wir sind gesund, darüber bin ich schon ganz froh. Ich weiß wohl, dass Du ein ganz vorsichtiger Fahrer bist, ich weiß aber auch, dass es zu Unfällen kommen kann, ohne das der vorsichtigste Fahrer etwas dafür kann. Jedenfalls war alles gut gegangen, und Deine alte Mutter hat bestimmt nicht daraus gelernt und wird immer nur ihr Liebstes fangen. Tante Betty schrieb, man macht dort noch mehr her mit Weihnachten wie bei uns, das hätte ich gar nicht gedacht. Es ist schwerer alle amerikanischen 48 Staaten richtig zu schreiben, aber ich werde mir Mühe geben, es dennoch zu tun. Von einer Bekannten die Kinder, die in Chicago a confectionary store haben, hörten wir, dass sie zum Thanksgiving Day 150 M. verkauften, nur die guten handgearbeiteten Pralinen, die wir auch gelernt haben, also gefallen diese drüben doch.
Ich grüße und küsse Dich herzlichst, Dir alles Gute wünschend, in inniger Liebe, Deine Muttel.Dein No.92 haben wir erhalten, es fehlt mir noch 91. Du bestätigst 81-83, es fehlt Dir demnach noch 80 von mir. Es sind jetzt hier beim amerikanischen Konsulat Bestrebungen im Gange, dass wer seine Papiere und Passage in Ordnung hat außerhalb der Reihenfolge herankommen soll. Wenn Du, wie Du uns schreibst, auch über 17 Jahre bist, so hindert dies Deine Muttel doch nicht daran, sich um Dich zu sorgen. Ich bin neugierig, ob Mr. Favs Dir uns zugesagt hat. Ich füge eine Kopie meines letzten Briefes an Dich bei, falls dieser nicht angekommen sein sollte, da er wegen der Auswanderung immerhin wichtiges enthält. Anton G. hat für seine Mutter das Visum für Cuba dort bekommen und wird sie in absehbarer Zeit abreisen.

We received your letter, dated 12.9.40, a few days ago, and we were delighted to hear that you are healthy and happy. We are healthy as well, and I’m glad. I know that you are a very careful driver, but I also know, that accidents can happen even if the careful driver is not at fault. At least everything went well and your old mother has probably not learned a thing from it and will always try to protect her loved ones. Aunt Betty wrote that they celebrate Christmas even more elaborately than over here. I didn’t realize that. It is difficult to spell all 48 States correctly, but I will try very hard to get them right. We heard from an acquaintance, whose children have a confectionery store in Chicago, that they sold 150 M. on Thanksgiving and only the fine, hand-made pralinés, which we learned how to make as well. Apparently there is a market over there for such a thing after all.

You acknowledged getting No. 81-83, so No. 80 is still outstanding. There are efforts at the American Consulate here to let people skip ahead of their assigned number if all papers are in order. Even though you are over 17 years old, as you reminded us in your last letter, that doesn’t mean that your Muttel stops worrying about you. I wonder whether Mr. Favs has accepted. I’m enclosing a copy1 of my last letter to you, in case it didn’t get there, because it contains important information regarding our emigration. Anton G. has obtained a visa for his mother for Cuba, and she will leave soon.
