Letter from Curt and Regina Schönwald to Henry Wald, February 14, 1941

Eine größere Freude konntest Du mir zu meinem Geburtstag nicht machen, als mit Deinen Briefen 97 (Englisch) und 98, die heute ankamen. Muttel und ich sind überglücklich, dass Du in der kurzen Zeit es geschafft hast. Mein guter Junge, wir haben immer gewusst, dass Du für uns da bist, wenn es einmal gilt zu beweisen, dass ein Kind für seine Eltern sorgt, aber Du hast mehr getan. Du hast uns zu Liebe auf ein Mädchen verzichtet und unser Dank dafür lässt sich nicht in ein paar Worten ausdrücken. Was wir heute empfinden, ist tiefe, von Herzen kommende Dankbarkeit. Wir werden nach unseren Kräften alles tun um diesen Dank abzutragen, das verspreche ich Dir und werde Wort halten. Von Deinem Chef ist es ein wunderbar gütiger Zug, wenn es so weit ist, schreibe uns bitte wie und in welcher Form wir uns bei ihm bedanken sollen. Wir werden dies natürlich in Englisch tun. Unsere gemeinsame Lehrerin ist eine Dame, eine bewundernswerte Person von 27 Jahren und beherrscht nicht nur Amerikanisches englisch, sondern ist auch mit allen amerikanischen Sitten und Gebräuchen vertraut. Dein Brief wird sie sehr erfreuen. Deine Freude kann ich mir im Geiste vorstellen auch Deine Impulsivität dem jungen Mädchen gegenüber, jedenfalls freuen wir uns mit Dir und sehen doch jetzt einen Anfang zu Dir zu kommen. Das ist für uns in der heutigen Zeit eine sehr große seelische Aufrichtung. Dein Brief 96 fehlt noch muss circa vom 5.1. sein. Du bestätigst mir 87/88, es fehlen Dir demnach noch von uns 84-86. In diesen Briefen und auch später habe ich Dir alles wegen unserer Nummer usw. ausführlich geschrieben. Hoffentlich erhältst Du diese Briefe inzwischen. Übrigens geht es hin und wieder beim Konsulat jetzt auch außer der Reihe, wenn man alles fertig hat. Dein Onkel Lothar hat uns nach einem Jahr wieder einmal geschrieben, der Brief handelt zwar nur von seinen Krankheiten und seinen Sorgen mit Frida, er denkt aber nicht an unsere Sorgen. Wie stellt er sich denn zu unserem Depot, das ist doch sehr wesentlich? Der Brief, mein lieber Heinz ist nicht lang, Du weißt ich schreibe nicht so weit ausholend, aber Du kannst es mir glauben, dass ich es herzlich meine und sehr glücklich bin.

Vatel hat Dir zwar schon alles gesagt, was ich Dir nicht besser und schöner sagen könnte, dass wir beide gemeinsam das Glück empfinden in Dir solch ein gutes Kind zu haben, bereitet uns unglaublich viel Freude. Ein Tropfen Wehmut ist doch dabei, dass Du das Mädchen aufgeben musstest, die Dir doch so viel bedeutete, zum großen Teil unseretwegen, es ist impossible für sie, für uns und unser Schicksal so zu empfinden, wie Du es vielleicht verlangt hast, aber Du bist noch jung, and wherever there is a will there is a way. Mr. Hill sind wir von Herzen dankbar und sehr verpflichtet für seine große Güte. Darf ich ihm einmal schreiben, oder ist das eine Belästigung? Wie gut, wenn man immer ein wenig mehr leistet, wie verlangt wird. Du bist halt ein Sonntagsjunge. Deine große Freude und Dein Glück kann ich mir vorstellen, nachdem Du doch gewiss bittere, wehmütige Stunden hinter Dir hast.

Ich glaube zwar nicht, dass wir meinen Geburtstag schon bei Dir feiern werden, aber wir können an der Hoffnung zehren. I am very glad that you liked my English letter. I guess I am getting ahead very well with the language and I am very fond of the lessons. We translate quite serious sentences and clippings and that is very good exercise. I admire your very good English and hope when being over there and the ear gets accustomed to the sounds, I will soon manage whatever is needed. Our lady teacher is a young married woman, she wants to immigrate to San Francisco with another lady and a gentleman. I take part in the circle. How nice that you enjoyed your first dancing party so well, I am very glad that you are enjoying your youth now. I have the same [?] as yourself. Frida will get married to Lothar in the meantime he gets an old man and has a lot of trouble with the household keepers. Gerard never writes us a little. Aunt Emma’s birthday is on the 23rd February. Vatel got tears reading your letter, you can’t imagine his joy. How do they call you Hans or Hank. I couldn’t get it out or catch (Ich konnte es nicht herausbekommen). Will you have a list from the china you have got at home till now, well we await your reply. Vatel is learning very diligent and he takes great pains but you can imagine that he can’t catch all he is learning in one lesson and he can’t have the feeling for it as I have got it.

You could not have made me any happier on my birthday than with your two letters No. 97 (English) and No. 98, which both arrived today. Muttel and I are overjoyed that you have made it happen in such a short period of time. My dear son, we’ve always known that you would be there for us if we ever needed your help, but you did even more. You’ve given up a girl for our sake. We cannot express our appreciation with a few words. What we feel is a deep and heartfelt gratitude. We will do anything within our powers to pay off our debt to you, I’ll promise you that and will keep my word. It is terribly compassionate of your boss to do this for us. When the time comes, please let us know how and in which way we should thank him. We’ll do it in English of course. Our teacher is a lady, a wonderful person 27 years old, and speaks not only American English but also knows American customs and traditions. She will be happy to get your letter. I can imagine your joy and also your spontaneity toward the young girl. In any case, we are happy with you and can see the beginnings of our reunion before us. That is a great psychological encouragement. Your letter No. 96 from around 1.5. is still missing. You acknowledged No. 87/88, so No. 84-86 are still outstanding. I wrote down everything important concerning our number in those and later letters. I hope you have received them by now. By the way, every now and then the consulate is going out of sequence in cases where all papers are in order. Your Uncle Lothar has written to us again after a whole year of silence. His letter only talks about his illnesses and worries with Frida. He doesn’t care about our troubles. How does he feel about our deposit? That is a very important matter. My letter isn’t too long, my dear Heinz, you know I don’t write elaborately, but you can believe me that my words come from the heart and that I am very happy.

Vatel has already told you everything, and I couldn’t say it any better or more beautifully to express to you that we are both feeling so lucky to have such a wonderful child in you. We feel incredible joy. We also feel a little bit bad that you had to give up your girl who meant so much to you, and mostly because of us. It is impossible for her to care as much for our fate as you may have asked her to do. But you are still young and wherever there is a will there is a way. We are grateful to Mr. Hill and indebted to him. May I write to him, or would it be a bother to him? How nice if one does more than is expected. You are a Sunday child after all. I can imagine your great joy and luck after spending many hours of sadness, I’m sure. Although I don’t think that we’ll be able to spend my birthday with you, we can live off of the hope.
