Letter from Curt and Regina Schönwald to Henry Wald, April 12, 1941

Wir haben in dieser Woche Deine Briefe 102 und 103, sowie den Brief mit Deinen Papieren erhalten und uns über Deine Mitteilungen und die Dokumente sehr gefreut. Der Brief mit den Papieren enthielt insgesamt 6 Schriftstücke. Am 2.März schriebst Du mir von einem kleinen grünen Abschnitt, der nicht im Duplikat kommt, dieser Abschnitt lag nicht in dem Brief. Die Duplikate kannst Du mit gewöhnlicher Post schicken. Ich habe nun schon den Transfer für die Passage eingeleitet und hoffe auf Erfolg. Unverständlich ist mir, dass ich auf mein Kabel an Dich, das am 18.3. abgegangen ist, bis heute keine Antwort habe, ist es nicht in Deinen Besitz gekommen? Der Inhalt war, dass Du die Absendung der Papiere beschleunigen möchtest und alle Papiere, wenn möglich direkt an mich senden sollst, nicht über das Konsulat oder Washington. Werde ich nun auf das Depot von Lothar und die diesbezüglichen Unterlagen bald rechnen können? Auf Deine Mitteilung, dass Dein Chef ein Affidavit gibt, habe ich Dich ja schon gebeten mir einen Text für einen Brief an ihn zu senden, ich habe dies als selbstverständlich anbetrachtet. Ich werde nun warten bis alle Papiere hier sind und kann dann erst einreichen, bekomme dann aber in Kürze einen Untersuchungstermin vom Konsulat. An Familie Krantz habe ich geschrieben und sind wir beglückt zu hören, dass Du wieder so nette Menschen kennengelernt hast und Dich bei und mit ihnen wohlfühlst. Aus Deinen gesandten Papieren haben wir ja nun viel Interessantes erfahren und sind darüber sehr erfreut. Muttels Geburtstag hast Du falsch eingesetzt, nicht am 25.7., sondern am 28.7. ist Deine gute Muttel zur Welt gekommen, aber da sie ja bestimmt geboren ist, wird dieser kleine Fehler nichts ausmachen.

Erst will ich Dir 102 beantworten. Wir alle haben uns unglaublich gefreut, dass Du so gute Nachricht von Suse und Alfred hattest, hoffentlich hörst Du nun öfter von ihnen, grüße sie vielmals von uns allen. Wie nett, dass Du bei Deinem Boss eingeladen warst, meinst Du es ist ratsam, für uns noch Bridge spielen zu lernen? Sehr amüsiert hat uns die Hell-Woche im Sorority Haus, das ist allerdings Humor, den man erst verstehen lernen muss. Wir würden so was mit harmlos bezeichnen. Ich freue mich, dass Du wieder so liebe Menschen kennenlerntest. Sind die Herrschaften Amerikaner oder die Leute aus Leipzig, von denen Du uns einmal schriebst.   Sehr interessant von dem Studenten, der von 14¢ pro Tag lebte, es ist alles Training. Von der Nichte von Frau Krantz hattest Du uns noch nichts geschrieben bisher, lebt diese in Omaha? Wer heißt Hazel, Mrs. oder Miss Krantz? Onkel Adolf Lachmann hat am 21.4. Geburtstag, lege doch mal ein paar Zeilen für Onkel und Tante bei uns ein, Du machst ihnen eine große Freude und Dir schadet’s nichts. Vielleicht schreibt Alfred und Suse auch an, wir können uns nur denken, dass Alfred in einem Flaschengeschäft arbeitet. Sie wollten doch Schürzen und Kittel machen, wahrscheinlich ist’s vorläufig noch nicht das richtige. Tante Betty legte uns ein paar Zeilen bei ihrer Schwägerin bei, sie schreibt, dass sie nichts von Dir hören. Heute las ich, dass Isolde Riss schon konfirmiert worden ist. Frau Wandras Vater ist gestorben, so sieht man immer mal Bekannte in der Zeitung. Vor drei Jahren waren wir in Dresden zusammen, heute ist der erste Osterfeiertag, kannst Du Dich erinnern?

Plockis waren diese Tage bei uns, sie lassen Dich vielmals grüßen. Sie hoffen nun doch bald zu ihren Geschwistern zu kommen. Was versteht man unter billing clerk, Rechnungs oder Sprachen Buchhalter? Uns geht es gut, wir sind gesund. Die Hausarbeit, kochen, backen und was es sonst zu tun gibt, gefällt mir sehr gut. Zweimal die Woche haben wir eine Hilfe für die gröbste Arbeit, aber sonst schaffen Tante und ich es sehr fein. Ich denke mit Haushaltsarbeit werde ich mir auch immer noch eine Kleinigkeit verdienen können, das wird immer gebraucht.

This week we received your letters No. 102 and 103 as well as the letter with the papers. We were delighted to hear your news and receive the documents. The letter with the papers contained 6 pieces total. You wrote me about a small green clipping, not sent as a copy, on March 2nd, but this item was not included this time. You can send any duplicates with regular mail. I have been working on getting the transfer for the passage and hope for success. I cannot understand why I haven’t received an answer to my cable, sent off on 3.18. Didn’t you get it? In it I told you to hurry with sending off the papers and to send all papers, if possible, directly to me and not through the consulate or Washington. Can I count on getting the deposit slip and all related papers from Lothar soon? I have already mentioned to you to send me a text for a letter to your boss thanking him for the affidavit. I figured this would be the only natural thing to do. I will wait now for all papers to get here and can only submit my request when everything is assembled. Soon thereafter I will get a case appointment from the consulate. I wrote to the Krantz family, and we were delighted to hear that you have met such nice people again and that you feel comfortable with them. We have found out a lot of interesting facts from the papers you sent and are very happy. You wrote the wrong date for Muttel’s birthday, not 7.25. but 7.28 is the date when your dear Muttel came into this world. But, since she surely was born at one time or another, this small error won’t be of great consequence.

I will answer No. 102 first. We were all delighted to hear that you’ve received such good news from Suse and Alfred. I hope you will hear more often from them now. Please send them our best. How nice that you were invited to your boss’ house. Do you think it’s a good idea for us to learn how to play Bridge? We got a kick out of Hell Week at the sorority house, but it’s humor that we still need to learn to appreciate. We would call it harmless. I’m happy that you’ve met nice people again. Are they Americans or are they the people from Leipzig about whom you told us before? How interesting, the story of the student living off 14¢ a day. It is all a matter of training. You never told us about Mrs. Krantz’s niece until now. Does she live in Omaha? Whose name is Hazel, Mrs. or Miss Krantz? Uncle Adolf’s birthday is 4.21. Please enclose a few lines for him and your Aunt in your next letter. You would really make their day, and it’s not a big bother for you. Maybe Alfred and Suse will write too. We can only guess that Alfred is working in a bottling company. We thought they wanted to make aprons and smocks. Maybe it’s not the right thing for the time being. Aunt Betty enclosed a few lines for us in her letter to her sister-in-law. She writes that they never hear from you. I read today that Isolde Riss is going to confirmation already. Mrs. Wandra’s father died. This is how what we read about acquaintances in the paper. We were together in Dresden 3 years ago, today is the first day of Easter, do you remember?

The Plockis came by for a visit a few days ago. They send their best. They are hoping to join their siblings soon. What is a “billing clerk”? Does it relate to invoices or languages? We are doing well and are healthy. I like doing housework, cooking, baking, and all the other chores that are left. Twice a week we get a little help for the larger tasks, but otherwise your Aunt and I are managing everything just fine. I think that I will be able to earn a little on the side when the time comes; housework is always in demand.
