Wir warten täglich auf Nachricht, da heute noch nichts gekommen ist, so will ich so schreiben. Inzwischen hatten wir einen Brief von Tante Betty vom 26.8.. Sie schreibt nichts besonderes, nur dass Hugo sich erholt hat und dass sie sehr schön wohnen. Adresse ist jetzt für beide Mount Vernon, New York, E. 327 Sidney Ave. Heute kabelte ich durch die Hapag. Es ist eine billigere Wanderung nach Cuba gefunden worden. Durch die Vermittlung des Rasenak sind hier tatsächlich schon eine Anzahl herausgekommen. Zuerst kostete es $950, jetzt $1150, aber es ist wichtig, dass es gemacht wird. Das Depot stellt eine Bank in N.Y. dafür, Rasenak ist nur Vermittler. Wie dringend die Angelegenheit für uns ist, kannst Du ermessen daraus, dass ich für das Kabel 200,- DM geopfert habe. Hoffentlich haben wir bald günstigere Nachrichten. Bei meiner Kabeladresse lasse Vornamen der Ersparnis wegen fort. Zusammen kostet es also $2300, das ist doch wesentlich billiger als bisher. Passage werde ich hier bezahlen können. Wir sind gesund.

Tante Hanna ist nun schon monatelang bei Lachmanns u. ich mache meine Wirtschaft allein u. es klappt alles ganz gut. Ich hoffe Frau Klara Gossmann schreibt dir einmal aus Cuba. Wir lernen beide weiter fleissig Sprachen, mir machts Freude, Vatel weniger aber es hilft ihm nichts, es ist doch so wichtig. Hier ist es schon recht herbstlich aber hoffentlich kommen doch noch warme Tage. Alles Gute zum neuen Jahr mein guter Junge, ebenso für Susel u. Alfred. Suse hatte sich an Tante Betty gewandt um von dir zu hören aber inzwischen seid Ihr ja in contact gekommen u. hört hoffentlich öfters von einander. Uns schreibt Onkel Lothar garnicht, nur an Onkel Lachmann, wir sind darüber nicht traurig, denn er hat doch für uns kein Verständniss. Mit Frieda ist's immer die alte Eselei. Innige Grüsse u. We are anxiously waiting for mail from you but since nothing came today, I will write without it. We’ve received a letter from Aunt Betty, dated 8.26. She didn’t write anything special, just that Hugo is feeling better and they are living in a nice place. Their address is now for both Mount Vernon, New York, E. 327 Sidney Ave. I sent a cable today via the Hapag.1 We have found a cheaper way to go through Cuba. Several people have actually gotten out of here by using Rasenak as a mediator. You can see how urgent the situation is for us by the 200 DM1 that I have sacrificed for the cable. I hope we’ll soon have better news. Don’t use my first name on the cable address to save you money. Together it will cost $2300 which is a lot cheaper than was the case so far. I will be able to pay for the passage from here. We are healthy.

Aunt Hanna has been staying with the Lachmanns for months now, and I am running the household on my own, and everything is going quite well. I hope Mrs. Klara Gossmann writes to you sometime from Cuba. We’re both continuing to study languages diligently— I enjoy it, but Vatel less so; yet it’s of no use to him, since it’s so important. It’s already quite autumnal here, but hopefully some warm days are still to come. Best wishes for the New Year, my dear boy, also to Susel and Alfred. Suse had reached out to Aunt Betty to hear from you, but in the meantime you’ve gotten in touch and hopefully hear from each other more often. Uncle Lothar doesn’t write to us at all, only to Uncle Lachmann, we’re not sad about that, because he doesn’t have any Understanding for us anyway. With Frieda, it’s always the same old nonsense.
