Letter from Curt and Regina Schönwald to Henry Wald, September 19, 1941

Wir hatten am 16ten dieses Monats Deinen Brief 119 woraufhin ich Dir nochmals kabelte, und warteten auf Brief, der bis heute nicht kam. Dagegen ging soeben Dein Kabel ein. Ich hatte mir schon Vorwürfe gemacht, dass Du Dich in schwere Geldsorgen stürzen wirst, um uns zu helfen. Ich bin so felsenfest davon überzeugt, dass Du alles versucht hast und es ist traurig, dass kein Erfolg zu erzielen war. Ist es auch Hans nicht möglich Dir und uns zu helfen? Nun mache Dir keine Sorgen, behalte Du den Kopf hoch, wir werden es auch tun und müssen abwarten, was kommen wird. Ich versuche augenblicklich das Vorvisum für USA in Barcelona zu bekommen und es ist möglich, falls die Sache weiter Aussicht hat, dass ich Dir nochmals kabele, sofern Du von dort etwas erledigen musst. Weiter möchte ich Dich bitten immer in Verbindung mit Frau Goldsmith zu bleiben. Sie ist sehr dahinter ihre Mutter herüber zu bekommen und zwei erfahren doch immer mehr als einer. Ferner setze Dich sofort in Verbindung mit der Tochter von meinem Vetter Rosenthal, mit Ilse Schäfer, Houston, Texas, Isabella 2424, die in Washington sehr gute Verbindungen haben und hoffen dort etwas zu erreichen. Die Muttel kümmert sich hier viel um ihren Vater, da er Witwer ist und näht ihm oft seine Sachen. Ich habe mich überzeugt, dass durch den Vermittler Rosenack eine Anzahl nach Cuba von hier gekommen ist, sofern man das Geld dort aufbringt. Die Passage ist kein Problem und wird von hier aus bezahlt. Nun, mein lieber Junge, bitte ich Dich, wegen des Fehlschlags nicht traurig zu sein, einmal wird es schon klappen und Du wirst, davon bin ich überzeugt, gut aufpassen und jede Gelegenheit prüfen, wenn es soweit ist, nur gib nicht unnötig Geld aus. Ich bleibe ebenfalls dabei Möglichkeiten zu finden, die uns eine Wanderung aussichtsreich erscheinen lassen. Gib uns immer recht bald Bescheid, schreibe regelmäßig, dann sind wir schon zufrieden.

Halte Dir trotz der Absage Dan, vielleicht brauchst Du ihn noch.

Sei nicht traurig, dass es Dir nicht geglückt ist, jetzt das Gewünschte aufzubringen, wir sind überzeugt, dass Du Dein Möglichstes getan hast und wir werden abwarten, wie so viele. Die Hoffnung bleibt uns und die Freude, dass es Dir und Deiner Schwester nebst Mann gut geht. Wir sind gesund, was ja das Wichtigste ist. Wir haben im Haus hier sehr nette Damen, die wir oft sehen und haben alle das gleiche Ziel, vereint mit unseren Kindern zu sein. Wir haben schon recht herbstliche, kühle Tage, bald wird der Winter seinen Einzug halten. Wie ist es denn jetzt bei Euch? Plockis wollen uns demnächst besuchen, sie hören viel Gutes von Walter, was mich sehr freut. P.’s haben jetzt gar keine Aussicht wegzukommen. Nun, mein Guter, lass den Mut nicht sinken, kommt Zeit, kommt Rat. Bleib uns gesund und sei innigst gegrüßt und geküsst,

We received your letter No. 119 on the 16th of this month and I sent another cable in reply. We are now waiting for a letter which hasn’t arrived as of yet. We did, however, receive your cable today. I already struggled with my bad conscience that you may get yourself into deep financial troubles in order to help us. I’m completely convinced that you have tried everything, and it is sad that no success could be achieved. Is Hans really unable to help you? Don’t worry yourself too much and keep your chin high. We will do the same and will wait to see what comes our way. At the moment I’m trying to attain the preliminary visa for the USA in Barcelona. If this proves to have some real potential, I will cable again in case you have to do something in the matter. Also, please continue to stay in contact with Mrs. Goldsmith. She is very eager to get her mother over there, and two ears are always better than one. Please get in touch with my cousin Rosenthal’s daughter, Ilse Schäfer, Houston, Texas, Isabella 2424, who has great connections in Washington and hopes to be able to do something from there. Muttel takes good care of her father here because he is a widower. She sews his clothing for him at times. I’ve found out for sure that many people here get to Cuba through the mediator Rosenack, as long as the money is there. The cost of the passage is not a problem and will be paid from here. Now, my dear son, I beg you not to be sad because of the failures so far. Someday, everything will work out. You will pay close attention and go after every opportunity that presents itself, I am sure. Just don’t spend any unnecessary money. I will continue to look for opportunities which seem favorable to our relocation. Please always keep us posted, write regularly. That’s all we ask for to be happy.

Despite of the rejection, hold on to Dan. Maybe we’ll need him at a later date.

Don’t be sad that you weren’t able to come up with what you needed. We are convinced that you did your best and will have to wait and see as many others are doing as well. We still have hope and the joy that you and your sister including her husband are doing well. We are healthy which is the most important thing. We have a few very nice ladies living in our apartment house. We see them often and we all share the same goal, to be with our children. We’re having very cool, autumn-like days now and soon winter will arrive. How is the weather over there right now? The Plocki family is planning to visit us soon. They have heard much good news from Walter. I’m happy for them. They’re having no hope to be able to leave anytime soon. Now, my dear, don’t get discouraged, with time come new opportunities.
