Letter from Curt and Regina Schönwald to Henry Wald, October 10, 1941

Deinen Brief 120 vom 15.9. erhielten wir am 7.10., die Post scheint wieder etwas länger zu gehen. Von Suse kam durch Rotes Kreuz vom Mai eine Mitteilung. Der Inhalt deines Briefes ist ja sehr interessant. Ich freue mich sehr, dass Du Aussicht hast Dich zu verbessern, nur bedauere ich, dass Du eventuell in eine kleine entlegene Stadt gehst, denn dies verzögert unsere Korrespondenz, bei der es gerade jetzt auf jeden Tag ankommt, besonders bei Kabelangelegenheiten. Auch wirst Du dann in unserer Wanderung nicht so gut orientiert sein. Dies alles klingt ein wenig egoistisch, aber glaube mir unsere Wanderung ist jetzt in einem Stadium angelangt, wo Tage eine Rolle spielen und ist sehr dringend und eilig. Ich vermute jetzt über Spanien, auch über Ecuador, letzteres kostet $500 pro Person, wirst Du dies aufbringen können? Der Betrag ist nicht verloren. Versuche alles, lieber Heinz, es muss jetzt schnell gehandelt werden, sonst ist jede Möglichkeit zu Dir zu kommen unmöglich.   Wenn etwas greifbares ist, werde ich kabeln und leite Rückantwort so schnell, wie möglich. Unsere Sorgen in der Wanderung sind sehr groß. Da Du vielleicht in die Indianergegend gehst, habe ich mir Dein Bild vom Einigkeitsfest von 1922 herausgesucht und neben mir liegen. Du siehst auf demselben sehr hübsch als Indianer aus. Lachmanns sind umgezogen, wohnen jetzt Berlin-Halensee, Eisenbahnstr. 66, teile dies Alfred mit. Hoffentlich hören wir bald über Deine Position.

Wie steht es mit den Aussichten von Washington, wenn Deine Bürgschaften in Ordnung sind für uns, müsste doch eine Visumsermächtigung für Spanien zu erhalten sein, dies wäre der beste Weg. Gestern sprach ich eine Dame, die am 15.10. nach Cuba durch Rosenack für $950 reist.

Du stehst nun auch vor neuen Ereignissen und warten wir sehr gespannt, wie sich alles entwickelt hat. Von den Schwestern von Hugo Gossmann hörten wir, dass Betty auf Dich nicht gut zu sprechen ist, Du hättest Dich bei Deinem Fortgang von New York nicht von ihnen verabschiedet, stimmt das? Wir sind alle gesund, was ja die Hauptsache ist. Hanna kommt nun wieder nach Hause und ich habe die bewährte Hilfe.

We received your letter No. 120, dated 9.15. on 10.7. The mail seems to take a little longer now. We received a message from Susel sent in May via the Red Cross. Your letter was very interesting. I’m glad to hear that you have opportunities for advancement but I regret that you may have to go to a small city further away from things. This could delay our correspondence, and right now every day counts, especially when it comes to cables. You also won’t be as well informed when it comes to our move then. This all may sound egotistical, but you can believe me when I tell you that our move has reached a point where every day could make a difference. Everything is very important and urgent now. I’m going with a transit through Spain, maybe even Ecuador. This may cost $500 per person. Will you be able to come up with that much? The money is not lost. Try everything, dear Heinz, things must move swiftly now, otherwise all opportunities to come join you will be gone. If something within reach pops up, I’ll cable again. Reply as quickly as you can, please. We are very worried about our move. Because you may go to Indian country, I have included a picture taken at the Unification Festival in 1922 and have it laying next to me. In it you look very pretty as a little Indian. The Lachmann family has moved, and they now live in Berlin-Halensee, Eisenbahn Street 66, please tell Alfred this. I hope we hear about your position soon.

How are things going with Washington? If your affidavits are in order we should be able to get a visa authorization for Spain. This would be the best way. I spoke to a lady yesterday who is leaving for Cuba on 10.15. It cost her $950 through Rosenack.

You are facing new opportunities now, and we are waiting anxiously to hear how things will develop. We heard from Hugo Gossmann’s sisters that Aunt Betty is not very happy with you. You supposedly didn’t say good-bye to them when you left New York. Is that true? We are all healthy and that is the most important thing. Hanna is returning home, and I will have dependable help again.
