Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, March 16, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

Still havn’t received any letters for several days however did receive two packages today. One from you containing cheese, coffee and sardines and the one from Charlotte and Dorothy with coffee. Thanks a lot to all of you the coffee will really come in handy packed the way you did same and will really taste delicious with the sardines and cheese.

We had quite a busy day yesterday and last night. Finally got to bed about 3:00 AM and up again at 6:30. We were off duty today so Insull, Barron and I took our bed rolls, went up into the woods in the nice sunshine and went to sleep. I slept right through chow this noon and finally got up about 4:30 this afternoon. It was really a beautiful day and reminded me of some of the days we used to go on picnics back home. It would surely have been a grand day for one even to including the flies and gnats. The main annoyance came from the artillery barrages at intervals throughout the day. When those things open up they vibrate everything in the   vicinity. We had to evacuate one of our boys from the station platoon yesterday when he was found to have appendicitis. We were in hopes it would be nothing serious and that he could return soon but looks now as though it may be some time.

The boys are sitting here taking each others blood pressure at the present. Naturally after each one they say “you'll never go overseas” with that blood pressure. Its funny the things fellows find to do to help pass the time and get a few laughs. Captain Martin, who has been overseas over 1 ½ years is always telling us the war will never be over. Of course he is looking forward to and hoping for an early ending.

Well darling I really don’t have any more news for today. Hope I hear from you tomorrow.

All my love Clarence
