Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, June 3, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

Another week end has passed and still no news as to our next move. The time really drags and especially on week ends. I think many more of these and I will be completely nuts. I havn’t done a thing all day except to make two trips to Bn Hqs. For mail and our company distribution. I’m getting to the point now where I’d like to get on the move again, get this damn thing over and get home. The more I see, hear and read, the more disgusted I get. Tonite I read in the S and S where acting Sec. of War, Patterson stated it would be impossible to release men of 40 instead of 42 because it would be unfair and unreasonable to many of the long combat veterans. Apparently the Son-of-a-bitch thinks its fair to hold them even tho putting a halt to drafting of men over 30. It makes me so damn mad I’d write write him a letter myself if I thought there was a chance of getting it thru the brass censors.

You asked in one of your letters about the fellows   (2) who were injured at Dachau when we were heavily shelled. I think the only one you knew was Richie, he was with us when Don and his wife were at camp that night. He received a piece of shrapnel in his foot, nothing serious however. The other two were Zelnick and Nussenblatt. Zelnick was the most seriously injured receiving two pieces in the back of his head. He isn’t with us yet but expect him back from the hospital soon.

I received your letter of the 25th tonight. Apparently my mail still isn’t coming thru to you. I can’t understand why it is being held up. You seldom mention of receiving many letters and I have missed very few days of writing every day. I am wondering if they are losing them, if not you should be getting gobs of them some time soon. I didn’t get to write last night as I explained in my letter this morning so am writing two today.

I suppose by this time they have operated on Viola. I have been wondering how she came three samel.[?] Okay I hope. Has Pete heard as [?] his   (3) set-up is to be. I have also wondered if his address is still the same since I have never heard from him. I thought perhaps if I happened to be lucky enough to get a pass to Paris some time I would look him up. I doubt if there is such a possibility but one can never tell.

Well darling it is now 11:00 and reveille in the morning, we get up at 6:00 now, so think I better turn in. I will inclose a few more pictures, if you want any of these negatives let me know otherwise think I will throw them away after hearing from you. I have two prints of most of them and will send the others home later in case some one wants them. Goodnite honey.

All my Love Always Clarence.
