Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, October 6, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

I did pretty well in the mail again last night honey receiving your letter of the 27th and also one from Charlotte and Jake. I sent Jake some of the Dachau pictures and he was very pleased to get them. Said he showed them to hundreds of people and even then many of the people hardly wanted to believe the facts. He also mentioned he would like to visit Germany if possible next year as he didn't go to Germany when he was here in 1937. Said they were opening six new stores and that I was assured of my job upon my return. Hanks wrote that the Lincoln store would be ready for me and to hurry back. I answered his letter today so will inclose it so you can read same. You will notice at the end he he says, “How do you like married life”, the rat. Of course he also had to mention the boat trip as I had written him about taking the trip on Loch Lomond.

Jessen, Hudyka and I went to the show last night and saw “Endearing Young Charms,” believe it one of the best I have seen over here and really enjoyed it.

I plan to go down tonite to see Danny Kaye but I’ve forgotten the name of the picture. The Cap’t saw it this afternoon and said it was very good.

I am inclosing the clipping about wives in Europe which I knew would be of interest. Also Gen Marshall said in the S & S today that two year men would get out late this winter, now if I can manage the furlough deal I believe things will work out okay.

It is raining again today making fourteen consecutive days of rain and snow. It looks like it may last from now on till the 1st of the year.

I got quite a kick out of the cartoon you sent and that is really the truth too. Think I will pin it on the wall of the station. Was glad to hear Pete finally got his forms completed toward getting home, maybe it won’t be too long now.

Well darling its time for me to go to work again so will close for now,

I Love You — Clarence.
