Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, October 7, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

No mail again tonite honey and I was so sure there would be too. We are beginning to think that all of our mail is again coming by boat. My most recent letter from you was Sep’t 26th, of course the weather here has been horrible for flying and possibly the planes are grounded. It rained all day again making a total of 15 consecutive days. Believe me it gets plenty tiresome.

After writing you yesterday I also ansered Kemp’s letter. Last night we went to the theater here in Hallein and saw Danny Kaye in “Wonder Man.” It was in technicolor and beautiful but I thot it a little too silly to be good. Tonite we went to the Roxy in Salzburg and saw “Blood on the Sun” with James Cagney and Sylvia Sidney. I thought it was marvelous and thoroughly enjoyed same. I think thats the first I have seen her in years but she is still wonderful.

Tonite when we were eating chow (piss poor too) - Cap’t Benton called me over to the officers table and introduced   me to a Cap’t formerly from Lincoln. His father had previously owned Piller’s Pharmacy before Geo De Witt purchased same. He of course kew George very well and also my store. I’m not sure but think he is in quartermaster corps from the insignia he was wearing.

Some of the boys who left the Co and went to the 26th Div — came down to visit us over the weekend. I guess their set-up isn’t too good and they expect to be around for at least another 60 days.

Honey I found the Armed Services edition of Earth and High Heaven so now have something to read. I felt quite sure it would be coming in as we usually get most of the good books sooner or later. I had planned to read it tonite however the boys talked me into going to the show instead.

Well darling that’s about all the news for now so bye for tonite and still hoping to see you soon.

I Love You Clarence.
