Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, October 9, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

Honey I must confess that I was a bad boy last night and didn’t get a letter written. Yesterday the NCO’s liquor ration arrived and in it were 6 bottles of “Three Feathers” and two bottles of Scotch. I wasn’t lucky enough to win one but Smokey Snover did and he invited Hudyka and I down to his room for a few drinks. After we had a few drinks we went to the show and saw Fred Allen and Jack Benny in “In the Bag”. It was fairly good but I have seen much better. When the show was over we rushed up to the station to get our mail only to find there was none. I was so disappointed I went up and went to bed before even listening to the balance of the 12 inning World Series game. The whiskey tasted wonderful since we get it so seldom it is really a treat. We are all sweating out the ambulance from clearing tonite in hopes of getting some mail on it. I decided to write you now and then if I get some letters will write again after receiving them tonite. If I don’t get some tonite I am   really going to blow my top.

The weather has been beautiful for two days now with continuous sunshine. I took a couple pictures of the snow capped mountains across the valley as they looked so pretty. The air is quite cool naturally because of all the snow higher up. Tomorrow I plan to take my new overcoat down to the tailors for a nice pressing job. I got a feeling I’m going to need it one of these days soon.

Watson just called me from Zell Am Sea and was trying to get our Morning Report straightened out. We have a new clerk down there and you can imagine anyone trying to handle this army red tape without experience. I am still working in the C.P. and it seems I do nothing but type reports and endorsements all day long.

I havn’t heard any more regarding the furlough but Cap’t Benton still feels I will get it. I should know one way or the other within about four or five days.

Will close now as the ambulance has just arrived — I’m hoping honey —

I Love You Clarence.
